An Expedition for Higher Learning

The students of class XII B attended a biotechnology and microbiology expo and a few students from classes VII, IX and X presented their models in the tenth annual "Popularization of Science" expo on the Tenth of July at the Kumararani Meena Muthiah College of Arts and Science. The event began with a lecture by the chief guest for the day Dr. Mugeera Fathima on the Applications of Science in everyday life. She spoke of the connectivity between science and Math. The second lecture was delivered by Mr. Mohammed Salim, an alumnus of the college who spoke about the methods to clear competitive exams and the numerous alternate courses related to science. Then the students were led to the Biotechnology lab where a volunteer explained about the different apparatus involved in Biotechnology.

Later the students visited the Microbiology lab where they learnt about osmosis, fermentation, biogas, importance of microbes, et cetera. The students too presented models and won prizes.

Field Trip – Std III

Class 3 was taken for a field trip to the Rail Museum situated at the Integral Coach Factory, Villivakkam on 5th of July 2019. Class teachers, Rashi Pareek and four parents escorted the students.

The students viewed a clipping ,'The History of Railways' at the A.V.Hall at school and they answered a few questions provided in the activity sheets. They also enjoyed a train song 'Train train….' They boarded the bus at 9.45 a.m. and reached the museum at 10.20 a.m.

The students were taken to various spots at the Museum.

  • The Art Gallery: A display of photographs of Indian Railways during the time of the British and after Indian Independence.
  • The Mountain railway engine: A display of ‘Pinion and Rack’ that grip the engine and the carriages from slipping down the slopes and an explanation by the teachers.
  • Fowler ploughing  Engine: An exhibit of  the first ever engine that ploughed fields.
  • Museum: Exhibits of ancient and modern engines, coaches and bridges and a double purpose furniture- a ladder and a chair (more than a century old) used in engines to save space.
  • Levers that change tracks.
  • Officers’coach completely made of wood and used by the British.
  • A joy ride in the children’s train.

The class returned to school at 1.15p.m.

New initiative of a multiplex theatre is under construction and will be completed in a period of three months. The teachers viewed a sample video and can be recommended for the next field trip. The cost being 20/- per head.

Hand wash activity

Children were taught the importance of keeping their hands clean and following hygienic practices through "Hand Wash Activity." Children were given opportunity to watch the visuals of hand wash steps and later on the teachers led the students through a demonstration. The children followed the steps enthusiastically and learnt to wash their hands. Parents and Teachers also participated in the programme to observe the children carry out the activity and provided feedback on their observations.

Field Trip – Std II

Class 2 was taken for a field trip to the Aringnar Anna Zoological Park (Vandalur Zoo) situated at Chennai on 12th of July 2019. Class teachers, Mrs. Sandhya and four parents escorted the students.

The students viewed a movie 'My Animal friends' as a pre - activity at the A.V.Hall, in school and they answered a few questions given in the activity sheet as a Post trip activity. They boarded the bus at 9:00am and reached the Zoo at 10:15am

The students were grouped in to 7 groups. A zoo educator gave a brief talk about the different animals at the zoo. The children were taken around the zoo in a battery car, where they got to see many animals like Bengal tiger, Lion, Elephant, Chimpaneze, peacock, monkeys, snakes etc.. Later they indulged themselves into having lunch and started to school at 1:30 p.m. and reached school at 2:15 p.m.

Gravity Workshop 7/07/2019 Sunday

The 'Young Scientist' workshop on Gravity for students of classes 6 to 8 was held on 7/07/2019 at IIT Park Sholinganallur. The children were accompanied by the Principal Mr. Senthil Kumar, Mr. K. Sankarayanan Librarian and Mrs. Priya Shankar Social Science teacher. Twenty eight students participated in the workshop. The students were grouped in two groups of 14. The resource person Mr. Satish and MS. Shilpa explained the concept of gravity with simple experiments. The children experimented and enjoyed the outcome. Videos on gravity were shown and the incidents from the life of Galileo and Newton were shared in the class. The children enjoyed the experience gained from the workshop.

The session was very interactive.
