Conserve Today Survive Tomorrow

– an excellent and mind blowing speech about Energy Conservation by Mr.Chinnadurai from the Electricity Department

Here is the gist of what he spoke in the Assembly addressing students class VI to IX and XI and all the teachers.

He started his speech about implications of ‘Power Cut’ and continued about why and what happens to the future generation, if we do not save energy today.

As per their statistics, 60% of the electricity we have already consumed. There is only 40% available now for our usage. This 40% will get exhausted in 40-60 years, after which there will be huge power crisis and we need to go back to our stone age where people lived without electricity.

He spoke about the two forms of energy

Mock Drill

The availability of the renewable source is for a very short period of 3 to 6 months because of lack of rain and wind. So we are forced to use non-renewable energy and hence we need to learn how to conserve and save the same.

Few tips for adults and children were given in a very fun-loving way and the students really enjoyed his speech and were very interactive.

Tips for students:

One and only tip “Index Finger” – which means switch on and off action.

He explained this point with an excellent example.

Adults use the Index finger for voting and that too once in 5 years. But, you children can use is many times a day to switch off and on.

Tips for Parents (i.e. adults):

  • Change all bulbs to CFL or LED, preferably LED-100 because the energy consumption by those bulbs are too low. 100 watts normal bulb > 5 watt CFL > 25 watt LED
  • Change tube lights normal choke to Electronic choke
  • Do not keep the refrigerator open for more than 5 to 10 seconds
  • Shut down the computer when not in use
  • Do not leave the plug in the 'ON' position if you have unplugged the mobile charger from it. Even that will consume 1 watt of power.
  • Do not leave the TV in the standby mode.

It was a real eye-opener for all us and we learnt that by following small measures in our day to day activities, we can contribute a lot to our future generation.
